Dr. David Miller, Deuteronomy 10:17 Devotional

Deuteronomy 10:17 – For the Lord your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.

How amazing is that!? He is an awesome God! I would strongly encourage you to choose carefully how you use the word “awesome” from here on. In Scripture, the term is only used when speaking of God or something that He has done. Depending on your translation, it is used a few dozen times, but it is used sparingly. Why? Because our God alone is awesome. We use this word so much today; it has lost its value. We eat awesome pizza after watching an awesome movie with our awesome friends. Just because something is really cool does not make it awesome. God’s grace is awesome. Someone surrendering their life to Christ is awesome. Creation is awesome. Pizza is just good. We need to reserve a particular vocabulary for very special things. Love. Honor. Awesomeness. These words (and others) need to retain their value and special use. Let’s be the ones who choose to see our God as awesome and incomparable to anyone or anything else. He deserves nothing less!

David Miller, is the Associate Dean for the traditional program, assistance professor of Bible and theology, Director of the honors program.
