Former U.S. Diplomat & Academic Scholar Appointed Chief Academic Officer
B. David Benedict has been appointed the Chief Academic Officer at Trinity College of Florida by President Mark T. O’Farrell. Dr. Benedict currently is professor of political science and international relations at Houghton College, located in Houghton, NY. While at Houghton he started the political science program, served as the director of the international relations program and was director of the Houghton in London program.
Dr. Benedict’s distinguished academic career includes several visiting professorships as a Fulbright Scholar at Nanjing University (2011 Nanjing, China) and Yerevan State University & Brusov Institute (2004 Yerevan, Armenia). He was also a visiting professor at Vladimir State University & Law School in Vladimir, Russia (1997).
Prior to his academic career, Dr. Benedict served as a diplomat in the U.S. Department of State from 1980-1989. His assignments included appointments in Washington D.C.; Ciudad Juarez, Mexico; Taipei, Taiwan; and Shenyang, China.
Dr. Benedict’s research interests include international relations (IR), IR theory, American foreign policy and diplomacy, and comparative politics and area studies. He has received numerous awards and commendations for his work and research and frequently serves as an expert speaker and commentator to media outlets and civic organizations on national and international issues.

Dr. Benedict is currently completing his visiting professorship at Nanjing University through the Fulbright Scholar Program, Council for International Exchange of Scholars and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department. He will assume his responsibilities at Trinity College of Florida on August 16, 2011.
Dr. Benedict holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania. His B.A. is from Houghton College in history, French, and political science. Dr. Benedict is fluent in Chinese (Mandarin), Spanish, and French. Active in his community, Dr. Benedict has served as a prison ministry leader, lay preacher, deacon and elder in his local church. His wife, Linda, holds a Juris Doctorate and MBA and together they have two grown children.
